Maybe I Have Bronchitis Again … and a Lawsuit Update
My chest hurts and my throat feels tight and dry when I take a breath. I’ll bet it’s bronchitis again. I’m sick to death of this blankety-blank cold!
So, I haven’t heard from the accident lawyer since December, so I called last Monday for an update, since several e-mails went unanswered. I asked for my lawyer — I’ll call him Dan.
The receptionist says, “He’s no longer with the firm.”
I said, “Okay, when were y’all planning to tell me this, since I have been trying to reach him for three weeks? Who’s going to handle my case?”
So the receptionist tosses me over to Dan’s former assistant, who tells me that “Nat” will be taking over. Okay, Nat’s a partner, so I’m all for that. So Dad, Mom, and I all went down to Nat’s offices on Friday afternoon to bring him up to speed on the case and to find out what our next steps are.
Come to find out Dan has decided to leave practise and become a teacher in law school. My grandma always said, “Them as can, does; them as can’t, teach.” Sooooooo. I mean, Dan was a nice guy and all, but he just wasn’t very aggressive or self-motivated. He didn’t communicate well with us, and it was kind of frustrating to deal with him. These are not good personality traits for a person who has to interface with clients and negotiate with adversaries. Ya know?
Also come to find out that we aren’t getting anywhere because there’s no “permanent disability rating” for me or mom. This PD rating gives the lawyers a benchmark for damages above and beyond medical and pain-and-suffering. Basically, it gives them an idea of how much is reasonable as a settlement. And if we’d been told this oh, two to three months ago, we could already have it done and be closer to a settlement. Sigh.
So mom and I are going to go to the doctors and chiropractors and get our PD ratings, and get them to the lawyer ASAP. And then things will finally start moving. Which would be nice.
