Researchers at Cambridge are working with Adenbrookes Hospital to gain funds for a 12-month trial in which Alsatians and Labradors will be trained to detect signs of prostate cancer in British men.
Now this concept stirs up some terrifying mental images of those exams. I mean, we already have trouble getting guys to go to the doctor, what with that gloved finger and the “turn your head and cough” ritual. So now we’re going to bring in an Alsatian to sniff their crotches for signs of prostate cancer?
Seriously, the dogs will be trained to recognize the smell of urine samples from men with malignant prostate. (I guess that means the guys still get to pee in a cup.) After their training, the dogs will be tested with some 200 samples, and their success rate will be scored to determine the efficacy of the method.
If American dogs were being trained to sniff men’s urine and were tested by being required to sniff 200 samples, would it constitute cruel and inhuman punishment, and would PETA protest? If so, what costumes would they wear?
