Migraines and Kids

Posted by Editormum on 1 November 2007 in Uncategorized |

My younger son had a migraine yesterday. Poor tyke. He’s only nine. And he was in so much pain that he was struggling to keep back the tears.

We didn’t go trick-or-treating, because I’m still not feeling at the top of my form, and I wasn’t up to trekking up and down our block in the cool night air. So the compromise was to get Wendy’s hamburgers, take them to our house (which is in a denser neighbourhood than my parents’), and hand out candy to the kids who came by, until 8:30, when we’d head home. So they got what they wanted: to dress in costume and meet trick-or-treaters, plus the bonuses of dinner out and getting to stay up half an hour past their bedtimes. And I got what I wanted: a quiet evening at home and no mile-long hike in the dark.

But the little one just wasn’t up to it. So he lay on the couch, watched Flushed Away and then played a video game on the PS2, while his brother and I did candy duty. And when it was time to go home, he was almost frantic. His brother buckled him into his booster seat, and I went home as fast as I dared. He went straight upstairs and got into bed … I had to undress him and put his pajamas on him. And, of course, I gave him some children’s Motrin for the pain. He was asleep within ten minutes. He seemed fine, but a bit slow-moving, this morning.

I guess I’m going to have to take him to my headache doctor and see what’s wrong with him. See what we can do to ease the problem. He doesn’t get these often, but when he does, they are killers. Being a migraine sufferer myself, I know exactly what he’s going through. And I can’t stand the thought of it.

Hope He’s Feeling Better! My husband and sister suffer from migraines — sorry to hear your little one was so sick. My husband had to give up all sweets and soda when he was young and got a lot of relief from that (though it wasn’t much fun). Good Luck.

My son had migraines from age 5-10. After we started seeing a chiropractor they went away… for the most part.
