Do Other Dads Do This?

Posted by Editormum on 24 June 2008 in Uncategorized |

My darling daddy e-mailed me yesterday to make a date with me. He wants to take me to lunch today, because it’s my birthday.

I wonder if other dads know how important it is to their daughters to spend time with their dads. I treasure the special lunches that Daddy has taken me to over the years. Sometimes to a fancy restaurant; sometimes to a simple one. Sometimes we talk about deep, important stuff; other times, it’s light conversation on trivial topics.

But I feel like my dad loves me profoundly and unconditionally, just because he chooses to take time with me. Just me. We take time on the things we care about most in life. We let other things, sometimes important things, slide so that we can lavish time on that which we treasure. And my dad takes time with each of his kids, even now that we are grown and “independent.”

That’s really special. I don’t always appreciate how special until I’m talking to others, who express amazement, shock, or disbelief at how strong my relationship with Mom and Dad is. But it’s strong because they made the investment of time, over and over, throughout the past decades.

If you are a parent, please know today that TIME is the most important investment you can make in your relationship with your child. Even when that child is grown.
