Clueless People!

Posted by Editormum on 16 December 2006 in Just Another Single Mother |

X is so clueless. He won’t watch television, which I can respect. But he apparently doesn’t read the paper, check online news, or listen to the radio.

I found this out on Friday, when I heard and read the reports of the terrible storms in Washington State. My ex has family in the Seattle-Tacoma area, but I don’t have cell phone numbers, so I broke my rule never to talk to him about anything but the kids, and e-mailed him to ask if his family were all right.

He e-mailed me back that he didn’t know anything about the storms. I told him to look on the MSN front page and told him that the power and phone lines were down, so he’d need to call a cell and hope the towers were still working. (Later found out his family is powerless, but okay.)

Like I said, I respect the refusal to have a television. There are days that I am tempted, and we don’t really watch a lot. Mostly the news, Survivor, and House. An occasional CSI or NCIS. Much of what is on television is dreck at best, and dangerous at worst. So I can appreciate not having/not watching the tube.

But not to keep up — even a little — with the news! That’s just incomprehensible to me. It leaves you clueless about what is going on in the world. And that could be problematic.

I haven’t had a telly for over five years plus. The news is a bad influence on my shattered nerves. And pop culture is rather repellent to me. TV is a great thing in general, but I wouldn’t make a habit of it. I do check CNN everyday for the national stuff like weather, earthquakes, worm invasions, lol…

I did not know that television viewing and single parenting could be done in the same house…

Mysteria, I’ve heard of people who keep up with news in other ways. We ourselves watch the news on TV and get it online, but I’ve heard of people who learned all the facts of events like the 9/11 New York terrorist attacks just through the newspapers. I feel there is really no excuse not to keep up at least a little with the news. It is essential to be an informed citizen in America, and the only way to do that is to keep up with current events.

No wonder you dumped this guy. If he’s that clueless about current events – to the extent that he doesn’t know he has loved ones in danger – what kind of father was he when the two of you were together? He must have been totally clueless about the needs of his offspring.
