Mother’s Day Weekend for a Single Mom

Posted by Editormum on 9 May 2004 in Just Another Single Mother |

Well, this was Mother’s Day weekend. So what did this single mom do? Not a lot by way of celebration.

Yesterday (Saturday) we got up and had breakfast and then went outside. I weeded the “woodland garden” and the north fence-line, and then planted four o’clocks and mixed morning glory seeds that I sprouted on Thursday night. I also went through all my seed packets and organized them. Then we raked up all the weeds and leaves and bagged them.

It got terribly hot by 11:30, so we came in and had leftover pizza for lunch. Then I tucked the kids in for their naps and spent a little while playing online Scrabble. I went back outside about 1:30 and trimmed my neighbour’s bushes back off of my fence. Then I went down the north side of the driveway, cutting all the dead hedge out of the hedgerow and pulling the weeds — which automatically “edged” the driveway. I mulched about halfway down the line, to kill the remaining weeds. Then I put the Weed B Gon in the sprayer and sprayed a very heavy application all over the hedge line, and even over into my neighbour’s yard. (Because I am having fits with his weeds constantly growing into my flowerbeds and killing my expensive plants.) I was going to transplant some azaleas, but, by this time, it was 4:30 and I was absolutely beat. I barely got the yard tools back into the shed.

I went back inside and took a long, hot bath, soaking my grimy skin and shaving, trimming my nails, and everything. I even did a spa mask treatment. Then I went and lay down for 30 minutes, until the kids woke up. They played outside while I worked a puzzle inside. When it was time for them to cover their sandbox, I went out and added hooks to hold the tarp down, so we wouldn’t have to use bricks any longer. Then the kids got their baths and we went out for Wendy’s chicken nuggets for their supper. I finally got the kids tucked in about 10, and I got caught up in my puzzle and worked on it until 1 a.m., when I freaked out at how late I’d stayed up.

We got up this morning at 7 and got ready for church. Then we went by my mom’s to drop of her mother’s day gift and borrow her video camera (mine is broken). The kids, thanks to my mom, gave me a lovely little filigree bell necklace. We gave mom a complete set of Lord of the Rings bookmarks.

At church, the kids did the whole programme. They did a great job. X came to hear them and freaked me out because he didn’t bring the kids to meet me where I asked him to. So I was all panicking, wondering where they were. I finally found them, and we stopped by Captain D’s for the kids a lunch. I had a headache, so I had leftover Thai Hot Sour Soup. After lunch, I tucked the kids down for their nap, and while they slept, I worked on a manuscript that I needed to get back to the author. When they woke up, it was time to go back to church for handbell practise — we are performing next week. We stopped on the way to get burgers for supper, and I almost couldn’t eat mine. As we were pulling up to the window to get our food, a big rat ran across the driveway from the burger place to the hedge lining the driveway. I was so grossed out.

Anyway, handbell practise went long, and was kind of tough because we had a key person out … it was hard to practise without her there. We got home and the kids are taking their baths while I blog. Now I have to clean the kitchen a little before I can go to bed. I want to get to bed early (well, by 9:30 anyway) so I can get up early tomorrow and do my workout.

And that was my Mother’s Day weekend.
