A Very Strange Weekend
I had great plans for this weekend, but I was just unable to get myself going on them. I had planned to tidy up and mow the yard, finish up the laundry and ironing, clean up the rooms, and get some filing done. Couldn’t get into it. I was too distracted.
So I ended up going to our church’s soup kitchen and washing dishes for a couple of hours. Then I invited one of the ladies there to have dinner with me. I had planned on just a two- or three-hour excursion, but ended up staying out until 1 in the morning. She was quite an interesting lady, though she is in straitened circumstances at the moment.
In any case, not getting home until half-past one, and then not getting to bed until half-past two (had to clean the kitchen, which I’d left a dreadful mess), I overslept myself this morning and was late for Sunday School. So I skipped it and went through the music I had brought to go over with the UMW ladies. They have asked me to sing for their December meeting. Expecting to do one solo, I find myself now signed up for two: Gesu Bambino and I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. Our resident flautist has also talked me into doing Gesu Bambino with him accompanying me on the flute for one of our church services.
I’m really trying to figure out what’s going on at the moment — no one ever picked me for a solo before, much as I wanted to sing, but now, all of a sudden, everyone and their chicken is asking me to sing. One of the other administrative assistants has asked me to sing The Star-Spangled Banner at her professional association’s meeting in the spring. (Thank heaven! Plenty of time to work on those high notes!)
I was thrilled to see dear Jim Hyter return to choir today. He’s been out for some weeks due to ill health, and I’ve missed him so. I’ve adored him since I was 4 years old. It was the world’s biggest surprise to find that he sang in the choir at my church, and we’ve had a lovely friendship since then.
In any case, it was just a very odd weekend. And I am dreadfully tired. I had hoped to finish folding the laundry this evening, but I think it will just have to wait. I’m going to bed.
