Funny How Things Hit You When You’re a Single Mom

Today, I’m thirty-five. I don’t feel any different, really. But I suppose it’s some sort of milestone.

The kids have been itching and uncomfortable for a couple of weeks, so I spent the morning with the kids at the allergist’s, holding them while we re-tested their allergies. Things are going to be changing at our house. My older son has developed allergies to peanuts and soy, which explains his itching. No more peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwiches for him. My younger son has outgrown his allergy to corn, but has developed a mild allergy to casein, a milk protein. So no more milk for him.

Both show continuing development of seasonal and environmental allergies. Trees, pollen, grass, animal dander, dust, mold, and cockroaches. Cockroaches? How in the heck do you manage that one? I abhor roaches, so I keep the house clean and keep those revolting, dirty, disease-carrying pests out. And it’s not as though roaches are cuddly little things … the kids don’t try to pet them when we do find one in the house; they run screaming in all directions while I find the hairspray and drown the vermin in it. And the last one we saw was almost a year ago. They seem to try to inhabit our house when the weather changes. But they don’t stay long. I’m not hospitable to roaches. So I’m wondering where on earth and how on earth you get an allergy to roaches. And how on earth am I supposed to fight that one? As I said, I haven’t seen carapace nor antennae of a roach in almost a year. Ah, well.

I spent the afternoon cleaning the kitchen and making supper. And I am beat. I am going to bed. What a way to spend a birthday. Jobless, in the doctor’s office, and cooking. Yee hah. Oh well, the after-doctor treat was nice. I got my older son some Shrek ice cream from Barking Rabbits, my younger son a Hawaiian Shave Ice (no milk), and myself a kid’s scoop of Barking Rabbits’s peanut butter and chocolate ice cream. (I don’t know why, but I’ve called Baskin Robbins “barking rabbits” since I was in college. It’s kind of like McDammit’s and Taco Hell. You just get in the habit.)

Anyway. Happy birthday to me. Yee hah.
