Time to Start Over

Posted by Editormum on 9 July 2008 in Uncategorized |

I’m going to start over on the Atkins Diet. It worked for me before, and I really, really want to lose this extra me that I’m hauling around. I plan to start on Sunday, to give me time to shop, clear the pantry of things I shouldn’t have, and get all the testing done.

Yesterday’s job was to find all my low-carb cookbooks and diet books. Did that. They were in the storage building, where we put everything when we started the home remodel in February 2007. I found them, took them home, unpacked and dusted them, and put them on the shelf in the kitchen.

Today’s job: get the tests. Off to the doctor for tests today. Most of it is the routine stuff: CBC, creatinine clearance, SGOT, lipid panel, etc. What I’m both anticipating and dreading is the glucose tolerance test.

Dreading because it is torture. First off, I haven’t eaten since 9:00 last night. I’ve had water, thank goodness, but no food. So I’m starving. And what will I get to eat? Well, at 1100, I get to break my fast with the most revolting substance in existence: glucose syrup. Oh, I’m sure it will be flavoured. But I can’t stand most of the flavourings used. And that’s ALL I get until three hours is up. Not only the prospect of no food except that nasty syrup for another four or five hours, but needle-sticks every thirty minutes for three hours, to test blood glucose and insulin levels. Ugh.

But I’m anticipating it because the GTT tells you so much about how your body reacts to food. So I hope I get the results fast. My doctor seems to think I will.

And tomorrow’s job is to make menus and grocery lists for the next two weeks.
