I Wonder Why….

Today was “Cake Day” at the office. That ‘s the last Friday of the month. We all wear jeans to the office (even the corporate executives!) and we get together at 1600 for half an hour of cake and ice cream. The cake has the names of all of the people who celebrated a birthday that month, and the type and flavour of the cake are chosen by the birthday people.

This month, there were several of us celebrating birthdays. Since my boss chose the cake two years ago (Lulu’s Coconut Cake), and I chose the cake last year (chocolate cake with chocolate icing), it was someone else’s turn. He chose strawberry cake with white icing. (Ugh!)

Now, here’s something that puzzles me. I weigh 225 pounds. Everyone at the office knows that I am on a diet. I never eat the cake (not since last June, anyway). But they always tell me, every month, to take the extra home for me and the kids.

I appreciate the gesture, but it does make me wonder. Why would you send a quarter-sheet cake home with someone whom you know is on a diet? And why would you send such a huge amount of cake home to just three people? And why, with childhood obesity on the rise, would you send a huge cake home to two little boys whose mother looks like Shamu?

(For that matter, why do we keep ordering such a huge cake, when there is always so much left over?)

Fortunately for me, absolutely no one in my house will eat strawberry cake. So I was able to politely and truthfully decline the offer of cake: “No thanks, my sons and I don’t care for strawberry cake.” BUT NO ONE ELSE TOOK THE LEFTOVER CAKE HOME!
