Catching Up

Posted by Editormum on 16 August 2007 in Just Another Single Mother |

With the new girl now solidly into her position, I’m able to spend time updating all of the projects that I’ve had to neglect. My desk at the office actually shows some desktop — I’ve been filing and typing and trashing and otherwise banishing items from my desk for the past two days. It’s lovely.

The only thing that scares me is that the girl across the hall (the Twit) has given two weeks’ notice. If they don’t find someone to take her place before next Friday, I will be doing her job for a while. In addition to my own. (There are some definite drawbacks to being the senior admin!)

Until that happens, though, I’m working hard to catch up. My job as recording secretary for my professional organization is getting caught up. I’m supposed to take minutes of board and membership meetings, type them up, submit them for approval, and distribute them, preferably within a few days of the meeting. July’s meetings were on 6/28 and 7/9, but I only just got them typed up yesterday! I expect to type the 8/6 minutes today, and the 8/13 minutes tomorrow. And then I’m caught up!

The newsletter went out “on time” — or as close to it as I could manage — which was a relief. It’s supposed to go out no later than the Friday before the membership meeting. I sent it at 6 p.m. on Friday. Since it’s sent to everyone’s work e-mail, most people would have gotten it the morning of the meeting, but as long as it’s before the meeting, I don’t worry too much. It was the couple of months where it’s been a week or more after the meeting that make me ashamed and unhappy.

I’m starting on the next issue of the newsletter already, as I have SO much to do in the next few weeks that I don’t want to risk getting behind again. I’m also working on the PowerPoint presentation that I need to be prepared to present next Saturday. I want to get it together by Monday so that I can practise several times before actually delivering the presentation.

There’s still a lot to do, but I’m accomplishing so much, so fast that I feel a lot more optimistic and a lot less discouraged. It’s a nice feeling.
