Me Poor Mum

I had to take Mom to the emergency room today. She was walking home from the neighbour’s house and missed her step somehow, twisting her ankle. She walked on home, put it up for a while, and thought it was just a twist, but when she got up to fix lunch, she couldn’t walk on it, and it was swollen and misshapen.

When I came home, my sons were speechless with worry, and Mom was in tears. My mother is practically impervious to pain, so when she’s crying from pain, you can figure that it’s about the intensity that would kill a normal person.

I called my dad and told him to meet us at the ER, which, thank God, is only about 5 minutes from our house. Dad works about 30 minutes away, so I got her checked in and we sat with her. We’d been there over an hour when they finally took her vitals and triaged her. Dad got there about ten minutes later, and sent me back to work. I took the kids with me.

They got home at 6:00 this evening … it’s a very bad sprain, but it’s not broken. She’s all strapped up and using my crutches to get about. And grandpa’s wheelchair. Daddy kept it after Grandpa (a double-amputee) died, and cleaned it up really nice. (Well, nice for a wheelchair.)

Anyhow. My mom isn’t used to being ill or out of commission. And she’s not going to be able to stand for a while. She’s going to have to let us take care of her — and she hates being waited on. It’s going to be interesting, the next few weeks.
