Almost There….

Basketball season, for my kids’ teams, will end on Saturday. I’m glad. They decided halfway through the season that they really didn’t care for basketball, after all, and it’s been tough to motivate them when their teams are losing games.

Last night, my younger son was angry because one of the boys on his team had pushed him down and called him an “idiot.” I know the little boy who did it — he’s severely ADHD, and he has a lot of trouble with impulse control. He also doesn’t deal well with frustration, and my younger son could frustrate St. Francis himself. Because he talks all the time. And that’s what had happened. The other boy kept missing shots because my son kept talking to him while he was on deck. It frustrated the other boy to the point that he lost control.

The other boy’s mom and I talked about it, and I think she was surprised that I was not very upset by the incident. Thing is, I keep telling Number Two Son that he needs to learn to be considerate and to stem the talking tide. He won’t listen. So, the way I see it, someone’s going to have to knock his block off a couple of times before he believes me. Better now, when the kids are not of an age to use weapons, than when he’s a teen and someone might haul off and shoot him.

Anyway, one more practise and two games, and we’re done. The kids have decided that Number One Son will play baseball in the spring, and Number Two Son will play soccer in the fall. This was their own decision … but I’m, frankly, relieved. Only one practise and one or two games a week now, instead of two practise and two to four games a week. MUCH easier!
