Great Day!

Posted by Editormum on 9 February 2007 in Just Another Single Mother |

Woke up to wintry mix (sleet, snow, frozen rain) falling in the area, so we got a little later start than planned. And the Chick-Fil-A I planned to hit for breakfast was closed for remodeling, so we got donuts (utterly ghastly) instead. But we made it to the mechanic’s by 8:30, and he was done (at half what the dealer wanted) by 9:30.

So, off to get tires. $400! But we really had no choice. The old ones were nearly treadless. I feel a lot safer now.

Then we did a bunch of little things … Barnes and Noble, World Market, Knowledge Tree … and then we stopped at Steak Escape for a sandwich for me, and then on to Chuck E. Cheese for the boys’ lunch.

I decided not to do pictures because both kids need a haircut, so we will do those in a couple of weeks. So we came home and had a comfortable afternoon at home. It was really nice.

It amazes me how much my eight-year-old has learned … and how quick at picking things up he is. He already knows his times tables nearly perfectly; he reads extremely well, and he’s got a nice manuscript. They’ve just started on cursive writing, and he has a bit more trouble with that.

The ten-year-old is a little slower to pick things up, and he’s very easily frustrated. So he’s a bit behind his brother in math … weird thing is, the kid can do his times tables pretty well, but he struggles with his addition facts. Go figure. He also struggles with reading … his main problem is that he doesn’t want to put forth the effort to sound things out. We keep prodding him along, though, and one of these days he’s going to up stakes and fly like an eagle.

Children pick up very fast provided they are inspired by anything.

Yeah. You know kids learn at different rates. I had trouble with my multiplication tables and reading but came out at the 98th percentile in verbal skills later and 85th in math. I had head injuries at various times during my life which interfered with my subtraction ability, but earlier than the age of 12 is still a fixable injury, if that is what is causing the older boy’s troubles. You already know to just give him time and lotsa love….

Thanks so much for the info on Villegas!
