Taking Things TOO Far
Three kids did a really dumb thing, and the grown-ups in their school are going way overboard in punishing them.
The kids got the “bright” idea to set up a myspace account, impersonating a teacher at the school. They apparently managed to keep it up for three days, and, of course, word spread around school, as things like that do. According to one local news broadcast, at one point a female classmate posed a question about whether she could have gotten a better grade if she’d done something risque. The impersonating students told her “of course.”
Okay. It was stupid. It was a truly idiotic thing to do. But kids have been making fun of teachers for centuries. It’s just that, nowadays, they can do it a lot more publicly than they used to.
But the school, in my opinion, has gone WAY too far in punishing these kids. One was suspended. One was put on probation. One was expelled and sent to a school for dangerous kids / discipline problems. All three are being sued. According to at least two news broadcasts that I heard, the ringleader was charged with assault and/or battery.
WHAT?! Who was assaulted?! Okay, I can see charging them with libel/slander, wrongful impersonation, even identity theft. But assault?! For a bunch of teenagers who admit that they did something really stupid?
I just think it’s excessive.

Yeah I agree… that is pretty harsh!
Sounds serious. These kids must have been in some kind of trouble before. Doesn’t sound like punishment for first time offenders. If they have never been in trouble before, then I think the school has gone overboard.
