Reveille

Posted by Editormum on 17 January 2007 in Just Another Single Mother |

I’m going to turn into a civilian female drill sergeant. Complete with annoying bugle music to accompany changes in activity.

I cannot seem to get my kids going in the morning. I figure that maybe, just maybe, if I wake them up to either banging on a pan with a metal spoon or loud renditions of reveille, I might be more successful. Especially if the “music” continues until their feet have hit the floor.

I can’t get them to come instantly to meals, either. So maybe, just maybe, if I crank up the stereo with brass playing Mess Call, they’ll show up more quickly.

And bedtime. Don’t make me laugh. Sure, I bed them down and tuck them in at 8:30, like any good, responsible parent. But they are in and out of the bed like so many kernels of popcorn until I lose my temper and threaten to spank them. Need a drink of water. Need to use the toilet. Need cough medicine. Need to change jammies because I’m too hot/cold. Maybe if, instead of the current book-on-CD programme, I stick them with endless repetitions of Taps, they’ll be so bored they’ll fall asleep.

I’m only half-kidding. Suddenly, battles that I thought I’d won years ago have been cropping up again. I’m stunned. And I’m looking for some new solutions.

I am right there with you! I have tried everything, I have dragged them out of bed, tickled them, spanked them, begged them, yelled at them and I have even poured water on them! (That works by the way, but then I must listen to them scream and cry all morning!)

And they won’t starve by missing one meal either…if they don’t come when you call (after about 5 minutes or so) the meal goes bye bye! Mine don’t often miss coming anymore at meal time!
