Embarrassing Questions
You wouldn’t have thought that listening to Bill Bennett’s talk show in the morning on the way to drop off the kids would lead to high drama and turmoil … but it did today!
Bill was reading a message from a girl about her dad, who is a doctor. Her dad did the ultrasound on her first child, but she told him that she didn’t want to know what the baby was, so he must not tell her, her husband, or her mom. So her dad only mentioned to mom that she should not buy blue.
So, my 9-year-old says, “What’s wrong with blue?”
I replied, “Well, you buy blue for boy babies and pink for girl babies, so he was telling her that the baby was a girl.”
(Can you see it coming?)
“Well, Mom, how did he know it was a girl?”
“He did a test that lets them see a picture of the baby inside its mommy’s tummy, and then he could see that it was a girl.”
(Can you see it coming? The Question is coming!)
“How can he look at it and tell it’s a girl, Mom?”
(Oh, God, I am so not ready for this conversation!)
“Well, honey, boy babies have a too-tickey, and girl babies don’t.” (Too-tickey is a family word for boy parts.)
“Mom, really. How could he tell?”
“I told you. Boys have too-tickies, and girls don’t.”
“Mom, you do too have a too-tickey!”
“No, honey, I was a girl baby, and girl babies are made different. They do not have too-tickies.”
“Mom, you are just silly.”
They refused to believe that girls are made different from boys. I guess we will have to sit down with a kids’ anatomy book and get to know basic biology. Sigh. I was hoping I could put this off at least a couple more years. And that maybe their dad or grandpa would explain this.
