Blessed While Buying Boots

Posted by Editormum on 6 December 2005 in Just Another Single Mother |

I had to rearrange my plans for tonight, because the weather-gurus are predicting some nasty winter weather for us on Wednesday night / Thursday morning. I discovered the other day that the kidlets had outgrown their boots, so I needed to get them some. I also needed to get some mittens for the mitten tree at church, and some nice lotions and soaps for the gift bags that my office gives at Christmas/Hanukkah to a local home for mentally challenged persons.

I was worried about finding some boots for the kiddies and for myself, but I was so blessed! The closest shopping center to my home has a Rack Room Shoes, as well as a Dollar Tree, TJ Maxx, Ike’s, and other places for getting good stuff inexpensively. When I saw the Rack Room, I stopped there first. As luck would have it, they were having a sale: buy one, get the second for half-price. And it applied even to stuff that was already on sale.

We ended up spending only $116 for four pair of boots. If sales tax here weren’t so high, it would only have been $106.

  • Kid 1’s boots were $21, marked down from $27.
  • Kid 2’s boots were $11 — the $27 boot that was on sale for $21, plus half off of that.
  • My “play boots” were $60, marked down from $70.
  • My “nice enough to wear to the office” boots were $15, marked down from $40 to $30 and then half off of that.

And I’d been really worried about being able to find them some nice, warm boots to wear without having a lot of time to run all over town, or a lot of money to spend by just ordering them on line. God knows what we need, and He puts it where we can find it if we just open our eyes and look.

I always know I can get kids’ gloves for the mitten tree at Ike’s, so we went there next. Sadly, they ‘ve doubled in price since last year, so I could only get half as many pairs as I usually do.

We got some other things there as well. And then the dollar store had some really wonderful lotions — so I got a body lotion and a hand cream for each of the women on the shopping list, along with a “magic towel” (a washcloth that is all compressed until you put it in water, and then it expands and reveals a pretty design). I have some “gourmet” soaps at home that I’ll give — one moisturising soap and one cleansing soap for each lady.

So that’s all those errands taken care of. We got home a little later than usual, but the kids got right to bed and I’m headed there myself. I feel better knowing that the kids have warm boots to wear if the weather really does go nasty.
