And no, it’s not what you think!
I often read Penelope Trunk’s blog “The Brazen Careerist,” because she’s very up-front about the fact that she’s not perfect, work-life balance is not possible, and some days just stink. Sometimes her ideas for coping are outrageous; some days they actually make sense.
I was VERY touched by today’s post. The most poignant, most applicable sentences: “… it is mommy porn: the visual fantasy of what being a working mom could be. …But this is the problem: It looks like these very successful women have it all, even though they don’t.”
This is SO true. Like PT, I read the articles about Angelina Jolie and her bazillion children, or J-Lo and her big family, and I think, “God, why can’t I hold it together like these women? Why doesn’t my house look that nice, my kids look that clean and sweet, my body look so gorgeous, and my schedule look so effortless?”
Of course, God says back to me, “Well, DUH, you don’t have a maid and two nannies and a cook and a housekeeper and a … whatever other staff those women have, not to mention bottomless bank accounts. Because I called you to bloom HERE, as a single mother on a single income trying to raise her two sons the best she can. And quite frankly, the job you’re doing, or trying to do, glorifies Me a whole lot more than Angelina’s and J-Lo’s successes. Because you HAVE to depend on ME. They don’t.”
I KNOW other mamas suffer with the envy of these apparently perfectly pulled-together, perfectly work-life balanced women. What do you think of the media that gives us working women “mommy porn” instead of useful, helpful, practical support?
