The Best Laid Plans…
… of mice and men gang aft agley. And boy, did my weekend gang agley!
I had to stay late at work, so the grocery shopping took until 7:30, which meant that by the time we got supper and bathed the kidlets, there was no time for laundry or games or a story. After I tucked them in, I got a load of laundry done and tidied up the kitchen. As I was filing a few receipts, I suddenly remembered that I had an appointment to get my hair cut at 8:00 a.m.! So I hustled off to bed so that I wouldn’t oversleep.
We got up and went to the hair salon (yeah, I have to take the kidlets with me — penalty of being a single mom, but they are very good about it). Then I took the kids for donuts … that made them happy. We also had to go to the library so that I could get some books for researching the articles I need to write. So we didn’t get home until nearly lunchtime. The kids sorted the laundry while I made lunch. I cleaned the kitchen and set the lamb to marinate. I made charoset, roasted eggs, prepped parsley and endive, grated horseradish, and so on, while the kids cleaned their rooms. Then it was time for supper. I think I cleaned the kitchen and ran the dishwasher four times on Saturday. I took an hour to play Mousetrap with the kids. Also, we got some books on tape at the library, and we listened to Redwall all day. It was too cold to set out plants.
I stayed up very late making display cards for the seder, so that someone else could present it if I didn’t get free from handbell rehearsal in time.
On Sunday, I reluctantly rolled out of bed and got the kids and myself dressed and fed and headed to church. The kids helped me set up the seder demonstration, and then I dropped them off at Sunday school and went on to hendbell rehearsal. The next few hours are a blur. Rehearse bells … run down to choir room to get my robe, stole, hymnal, and music folder … run back up to Sunday school to do the seder demo … clean up and pack away my seder stuff … run down to the kids’ choir room and help everyone robe up and give last-second instructions to my co-leader … run back to the sanctuary and play the prelude … meet the kids at our reserved pews and help them get seated … direct their little song … run back to the handbell tables and play the offertory … run back into the main sanctuary to see my kids sing … run back to the choir loft for the rest of the service … after service, I had to help hang up the kids’ choir robes, help put away the handbells, and return my robe and stuff to the choir room.
I was too bushed when I got home to do anything much, so I wrote a couple of articles and researched another. And goofed off with the kids. And then went back to church for handbell rehearsal.
Anyway, I’m dang near exhausted. I’m going to clean up the supper dishes and go to bed.
